SunPower to deploy 7.5MW solar installation in Phoenix, US

Solar panels manufacturer SunPower will deploy a 7.5MW system at the Lake Pleasant Water Treatment Plant in the city of Phoenix, US.

The company will design, manufacture and install 22,936 panels to produce 15 million kWh energy per annum to meet 70% of the plant’s energy requirement.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton remarked that the city enjoys 300 days of sunshine each year making it easier for the local government to support solar power initiatives.

“The Lake Pleasant Water Treatment Plant project is the latest in a series of solar initiatives utilized at various city locations to increase the city’s commitment to sustainable energy development,” said Stanton.

SunPower president Howard Wenger added, “SunPower’s technology will ensure that the system delivers energy over the long term, reducing operational expenses significantly with no upfront expenditure.”

The Lake Pleasant treatment plant produces 15 billion gallons of tap water per annum and the solar facility will bring $4.2m in savings over the next 20 years.

SunPower will operate and maintain the system that is expected to displace over 9,000 tons of CO2 each year.
