Phase one of installations at London Array offshore wind farm completed

A consortium of companies, including Dong Energy, E.ON and Masdar, have completed the first phase of installations at the London Array wind farm on the Thames Estuary in UK.

Construction was completed with the recent installation of the 175th turbine built across 90km² of area.

Located off the east coast of Kent, the wind farm is among the largest offshore wind farms in the world, and is scheduled to be fully operational by mid-2013.

The wind farm is projected to produce enough electricity to power at least 470,000 homes. About 55 turbines have already been connected to the grid and the first of them started power supply in October 2012.

The second phase featuring another 166 turbines is yet to be approved and once complete, the entire wind farm will occupy an area of 245km² generating a combined capacity of 870MW.

Masdar chief executive officer Dr Sultan Al Jaber said, “London Array is a testament to how collaboration, the right policies and a commitment to sustainability can advance the new energy industry.”

E.ON UK chief executive officer Tony Cocker added, “I look forward to seeing London Array’s contribution to the UK’s low carbon energy mix for many years to come.”
