CB&I announced it has entered into a Joint Development Agreement with Saudi Aramco that includes Chevron Lummus Global (CLG), CB&I’s joint venture with Chevron U.S.A. Inc., for the development, commercialization and marketing of innovative crude-to-chemical technologies.

Together, Saudi Aramco, CB&I and CLG will develop a unique integration of advanced technology processes for the production of high-value petrochemicals from crude oil. Specifically, CB&I’s ethylene cracker technology and CLG’s hydroprocessing technologies combined with Saudi Aramco’s proprietary Thermal Crude to Chemicals (TC2C™) technology will provide the platform for this joint development.

“It is an honor to partner with Saudi Aramco to develop the most competitive processing solution for crude to chemicals,” said Daniel M. McCarthy, CB&I’s Executive Vice President of Technology. “There is a lot of attention in the market to more efficiently produce higher value petrochemical products such as ethylene, propylene, butadiene and aromatics directly from crude oil. CB&I and CLG’s breadth of technologies and catalysts are unmatched in the industry spanning essentially all relevant refinery and petrochemical processes, which provide a strong foundation for this joint development.”

About CB&I
CB&I (NYSE:CBI) is a leading provider of technology and infrastructure for the energy industry. With more than 125 years of experience, CB&I provides reliable solutions to our customers around the world while maintaining a relentless focus on safety and an uncompromising standard of quality.

Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) today announces a final investment decision on the redevelopment of the Penguins oil and gas field in the UK North Sea.

The decision authorises the construction of a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, the first new manned installation for Shell in the northern North Sea in almost 30 years.

The redevelopment is an attractive opportunity with a competitive go-forward break-even price below $40 per barrel. The FPSO is expected to have a peak production (100%) of circa 45,000 boe/d.

“Penguins demonstrates the importance of Shell’s North Sea assets to the company’s upstream portfolio,” said Andy Brown, Upstream Director. “It is another example of how we are unlocking development opportunities, with lower costs, in support of Shell’s transformation into a world class investment case.”

The Penguins field currently processes oil and gas using four existing drill centres tied back to the Brent Charlie platform. The redevelopment of the field, required when Brent Charlie ceases production will see an additional eight wells drilled, which will be tied back to the new FPSO vessel. Natural gas will be exported through the tie-in of existing subsea facilities and additional pipeline infrastructure.

Steve Phimister, Vice President for Upstream in the UK and Ireland said: “Shell has had a strong presence in this part of the northern North Sea for more than forty years. Having reshaped our portfolio over the last twelve months, we now plan to grow our North Sea production through our core production assets. In doing so, we will continue to work with the UK government, our partners and the regulator to maximise the economic recovery in one of Shell’s heartlands.”

The Penguins field is in 165 metres (541 feet) of water, approximately 150 miles north east of the Shetland Islands. Discovered in 1974, the field was first developed in 2002 and is a joint venture between Shell (50% and operator) and ExxonMobil (50%).

A joint venture-owned/Shell-operated Sevan 400 FPSO has been selected as the development option for the field. Oil will be transported via tanker to refineries and gas will be transported via the FLAGS pipeline to the St Fergus gas terminal in north-east Scotland.

Rolls-Royce has signed a contract with Tuinbouwbedrijf Marc Pittoors (T.B.M.P) BVBA, for the supply of a 7 MWe combined heat and power plant (CHP).

The plant will be powered by two gas-fired gensets based on the new medium-speed Bergen B36:45L6 engine and will provide heat and power to a new tomato greenhouse in Belgium. The contract also includes a service agreement for 10 years. The gensets are scheduled to go into operation early November 2018.

Marc Pittoors will use the generated electricity to power the greenhouse artificial lighting and the heat extracted from exhaust gases and engine cooling systems to heat up the facility. In addition, cleaned engine exhaust gases will be injected into the greenhouse to increase the level of CO2 and boost plant growth.

Marc Pittoors, CEO of T.B.M.P said: “For our tomato producing company, three factors were crucial in taking this decision: electrical efficiency (best in the current market), expertise (Rolls-Royce developed a gas engine in the early 90s and was the pioneer in lean-burn technology) and optimum heat balance (5 hectares of greenhouse space are illuminated and 3.5 hectares are not).” Paul Hovius of PaCHov Consultancy conducted the sales and contract negotiations for this first CHP equipped with the new Bergen in-line engine.

“The greenhouse market is very important for us, and it’s a pleasure to sign a contract with a highly professional customer for this new generation of gas engines,” said Jeff Elliott, managing director of Bergen Engines, a fully-owned subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems and supplier of medium-speed engines.

Rolls-Royce will be supplying the complete CHP plant for this greenhouse, consisting of the power generator sets, the exhaust gas systems including a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and heat exchangers, and the electronic control system. In total, the technology achieves efficiency rates of more than 96%. Rolls-Royce has many years of experience with CHP plants and has since 2005 delivered 52 CHP plants with a total installed capacity of 270 MWe for greenhouses in Holland, Belgium, Russia and the UK.

As Indonesia continues to face energy challenges, GE Power (NYSE: GE) today announced it has appointed PT. Euroasiatic Jaya as an authorized distributor of Jenbacher gas engines in the country.

The move builds on GE Power’s ongoing commitment to provide power generation solutions to Indonesia’s industrial, commercial and municipality customers with reliable, more efficient power at or near the point of use.

PT. EuroAsiatic Jaya will sell and service Jenbacher gas engines in the country and provide Indonesian customers with full life cycle support of installing, servicing, operating, maintaining and supplying genuine original equipment manufacturer spare parts for GE Power’s Jenbacher gas engines fleet in Indonesia. PT. Euroasiatic Jaya’s extensive warehouse capacities will help support the fast availability of spare parts in Indonesia to help increase uptime of the installed engines.

“With our new GE Power distributor agreement, we will be able to greatly enhance the customer experience for companies that need power in Indonesia, ranging from natural gas and renewable fuels such as biogas and landfill gas to industrial on-site power production,” said Alexander Schmahl, sales director, PT. Euroasiatic Jaya. “Our growing team of skilled reciprocating engine technicians around the country, and our warehousing facilities will eventually help to ensure a rapid buildup of stock of genuine parts inventory to help ensure immediate, local customer support—both on-site and in our shops.”

PT. Euroasiatic Jaya brings extensive experience from Southeast Asia in power generation from natural gas and renewable fuels such as biogas and landfill gas. PT. Euroasiatic Jaya has been serving the Indonesian region since 1969. The company is headquartered in Jakarta, with more than 500 employees in seven countries in Southeast Asia.

“As the fourth-largest country in terms of population continues its economic growth and development, Indonesia is already one of the 20 biggest energy consumers in the world[1]. If renewable energy sources are not developed immediately, depletion of energy resources becomes a real threat to face this increasing challenge. Therefore, Indonesia needs to produce more energy from its renewable resources, and biomass is an opportunity to help solve Indonesia’s energy challenges,” said Wouter-Jan van der Wurff, general manager, channel for GE Power’s Distributed Power. “GE Power’s Jenbacher gas engines will allow customers in Indonesia to improve waste management while enhancing the use of an economical energy supply. With a localized workforce, our customers also will greatly benefit from PT. Euroasiatic Jaya’s extensive experience with both reciprocating engine technology and in the industry.”

Increasingly, companies with power needs in Indonesia are relying on on-site power systems to accelerate operational efficiency. The potential for biomass energy in Indonesia is estimated at around 50 gigawatts (ESDM, 2011), whereas the installed capacity (using biomass energy) is approximately 1,600 megawatts (MW) (Faizal, 2011). The gas engine product lines from GE Power, which include Jenbacher gas engines, bring the dual advantage of reliable on-site power as well as off-grid solutions. Jenbacher cogeneration technology can use biogas for power generation—technology that provides both economic and ecological benefits. Globally, more than 16,000 Jenbacher gas engines with a total electrical output of about 22 gigawatts have been delivered worldwide.

About Euroasiatic
Euroasiatic (EA) is a heat and power generation solutions provider. Established in 1969 and privately owned, the company is headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia, and serves clients and projects primarily in Indonesia as well as other South East Asian markets and its periphery. With core competencies in Engineering—Procurement—Construction—Commissioning (EPCC), After Sales and Investment (Build-Operate-Own/Build-Operate-Transfer) services, the primary focus is on highly reliable energy efficient systems with strict adherence to environmental compliance.

About GE’s Distributed Power
GE’s Distributed Power is a leading provider of engines, power equipment and services focused on power generation and gas compression at or near the point of use.

Swansea – Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay plc has submitted a planning application to Swansea Council to build an international watersport centre.

The application has been submitted following the exclusion of recreational facilities from the Development Consent Order for the energy generating station that was granted by the UK Government on 9 June 2015.

Inspired by traditional fishing warehouses and boathouses, the design of the 4,000m2 building has been developed by Faulkner Browns as an important component of the lagoon masterplan. Faulkner Browns are the architects behind the 2012 Olympics sailing centre in Weymouth and many other award-winning sports facilities.

Designed to complement local industry and heritage, the watersport centre will provide an ‘outdoors’ focussed centre of excellence for both recreational and competitive sporting facilities, complete with boat storage, welfare areas and orientation facilities supporting the iconic visitor centre out on the seawall. Critically, the building will also house operations, maintenance and research facilities supporting TLSB’s commitments to monitor and mitigate the lagoon’s environmental impacts throughout its 120-year life. This includes a lobster and oyster hatchery to support the company’s aim to invigorate these species’ populations in the Bay.

The hatchery will house a fully serviced aquaculture facility with a seawater circulation system of tanks and hives, enhanced by a glass envelope to generate greenhouse conditions for optimised algae growth. The greenhouse structure will harness solar power, generating a clean, low-energy, nutrient supply to the hatchery.

Alex Herbert, Head of Planning for Tidal Lagoon Power said: “The application includes the public realm and other facilities at the western landfall of the recently-consented lagoon. It is identical to the excluded facilities and demonstrates our commitment to providing all the benefits of the scheme as originally consulted upon.”

“The lagoon is an ideal place to host watersports, so we need the onshore facilities to support them. The watersport centre will be capable of hosting local, national and international events and we hope will encourage people to participate in sport using the facilities provided. We have given attention to disabled watersports facilities ensuring access and safe training for everyone.”

“The building is also the obvious place to house our research and monitoring facilities, supporting the commitments we made following the lagoon’s environmental impact assessment. We hope this facility will promote expertise in mariculture, as well as supporting environmental impact assessment work for TLSB and our programme of further UK and international lagoons.”

Mike Hall of Faulkner Brown said: “The project is a unique opportunity to use renewable energy generation infrastructure creatively to secure social benefits for local people in the form of this fantastic recreational watersports facility.”

As the world’s first, man-made, energy-generating lagoon, with 320MW installed capacity averaging 14 hours of generation every day, Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon will provide clean, renewable, reliable and predictable power for over 155,000 homes for over 120 years. It could be connected to the National Grid by 2019.

Tidal Lagoon (Swansea Bay) Plc

Tidal Lagoon (Swansea Bay) plc is a special purpose vehicle company established specifically to construct, own and operate the world’s first tidal lagoon power plant at Swansea Bay. The 320MW installed capacity project, developed by Tidal Lagoon Power Ltd, has a design life of 120 years and a net annual power output of over 500 GWh; enough to meet the annual electricity requirement of over 155,000 homes, or over 90% of homes in the Swansea Bay area.

The company is steered by the UK’s leading experts in major infrastructure design and delivery. Its board is led by Keith Clarke CBE as Non-Executive Chairman, supported by a governance board that includes Bernard Ainsworth OBE and Mike McNicholas. Project delivery will be led by Andrew McNaughton.

In December 2014, the project was named in HM Treasury’s National Infrastructure Plan, the Welsh Government’s Wales National Infrastructure Plan, and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s investment plan. The project’s approach to public consultation was highly commended at last year’s RTPI Cymru Planning Awards, while LDA Design’s masterplan for the lagoon won the President’s Award at the 2014 Landscape Institute Awards. Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay was named as New Energy Champion at this year’s New Energy & Cleantech Awards.

The project was awarded a Development Consent Order on June 9th 2015. The first phase of negotiations with the Department of Energy & Climate Change on a potential Contract for Difference for the project were announced in the Chancellor’s Budget in March 2015.

Tidal Lagoon Power Ltd

Tidal Lagoon Power is driving a critical change in the UK’s energy mix by developing infrastructure to harness natural power from the rise and fall of the tides. Its first project, the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, establishes a scalable blueprint for a series of UK tidal lagoons. The company is developing a fleet of six tidal lagoons to meet up to 8% of UK electricity demand. This fleet will exploit the opportunities that tidal lagoons offer for social, economic and environmental transformation, progressing projects that contribute positively in each area.
