Working at height is a daily reality in the power transmission sector, where inspections, maintenance, and grid expansion require workers to be on towers and structures with inherent fall risks. This whitepaper explores how engineered fall protection systems can go beyond regulatory compliance to actively shape safer behaviours, stronger confidence, and a more resilient safety culture.

Focusing on human factors such as fatigue, decision-making, and trust, the paper examines the limitations of traditional, manual fall protection methods and the cognitive and physical burden they place on workers. It highlights how hands‑free, continuously guided systems, such as permanent vertical lifelines, reduce repeated attachment actions, minimise reliance on individual judgement, and allow workers to maintain situational awareness while climbing and working at height.

Through practical insights and real‑world examples from power transmission environments, the whitepaper demonstrates how engineered fall protection can standardise safe behaviour across diverse workforces, support productivity, and contribute to long term asset integrity. Designed for safety leaders, engineers, and decision‑makers, it reframes fall protection as a cultural tool, one that embeds safety into everyday work and makes the safest choice the easiest one.
The post Hands‑Free, Head‑Up: How Engineered Fall Protection Builds Confidence and Strengthens Safety Culture in Power Transmission first appeared on Power Info Today.

In the last few years, more and more mining companies have adopted wind and solar systems to reduce their energy costs at remote off-grid mines.

In this first phase, the initial focus was on the integration capabilities as miners were afraid that adding intermittent renewables such as solar and wind could affect the reliability of power supply and even lead to production losses.

In various microgrid applications, renewables combined with diesel, HFO, or gas have proven to provide reliable power supply to remote mines.
For almost all mines, the integration of renewables will have a positive impact on their energy cost position. Mining companies do not have to invest their own money; independent power providers (IPPs) invest in the renewable energy infrastructure and sell electricity to mines through power purchase agreements (PPAs).

“This second market phase is characterized by price competition”, explains Thomas Hillig, managing director of THEnergy. “With the support of a leading renewable energy player, the new report analyses how IPPs can offer extremely competitive PPAs to remote miners.”

Large IPPs take advantage of economies of scale on components for solar and wind power plants not only for remote mining projects but also for much bigger grid-connected plants. Market leaders have managed to optimize the planning and construction processes substantially. However, conducting projects in remote locations, especially in Africa, requires an extended experience. Amongst the challenges of undertaking projects in Africa is financing, which requires an excellent relationship with local and international banks.

Cost optimization does not necessarily mean minimizing CAPEX but rather focusing on the total lifetime of the project and including O&M. It is also important to take the interplay of the different energy sources into consideration. Not every kWh of solar and wind energy generated means equivalent fossil fuel savings. When gensets run at suboptimal loads, they lose efficiency and require additional maintenance.

“During the last 14 years, we have gained experience in renewable energy projects including solar-diesel hybrid microgrids, projects in remote locations and in developing countries”, points out Alexis Goybet, Head of Hybrid Solutions at Voltalia. “Our experience adds up to our economies of scale in procurement and translates into significant overall cost-reductions in the range of 20-30% in comparison to new market entrants.”

These overall cost reductions will make solar and wind energy extremely attractive for many mines. The number of remote mines that add renewables to diesel, HFO or gas is expected to grow quickly all over Africa.

For further information and detailed results, please have a look at the report:
https://www.th-energy.net/english/platform-renewable-energy-and-mining/reports-and-white-papers/

Chinese solar products manufacturer LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd, along with its wholly-owned subsidiary LONGi Solar, the world’s leading manufacturer of mono cells and modules, has announced plans to expand its solar cell and modulefactory in India’s Andhra Pradesh region to meet the country’s rapidly-rising demand for solar energy and increase LONGi’s overseas sales.

Responding to growing market demand, LONGi will invest US$309million, including about US$240 million in construction investment and roughly US$68 million in working capital, to double the capacity of its cell and module factory in Andhra Pradesh from 500MW to 1 GW respectively.Construction on the expandedmodule factory is scheduled to be completed and production will commence by the end of August 2019, while the cell factory is set to start production in January 2020.

“The expansion of our Andhra Pradesh factory is part of LONGi’s global growth strategy. While global demand for solar modules continues to grow, LONGi is making moderate capacity investments in select markets to hedge against the risks of trade protectionism, while remaining focused on the Chinese domestic market,”saidMr. Wenxue Li, the president of LONGi Solar. “According to preliminary estimates, the new expansion will supportUS$380 million in annual sales and roughly US$19 million in net profit every year.”

“India is already China’s biggest export market for solar products by sales value. During 2017, China’s exports accounted for 24.1 percent of India’s solarproducts, with sales growth seen in both cells and modules,” Mr. Wenxue Li said.

The project is being operated by Lerri Solar Technology (India) Private Ltd, which is 40 percent owned by LONGi and 60 percent owned by LONGi Solar.

Expanding production capacity in India will enable LONGi to take advantage of India’s rich local resources, low costs and generous policies toward the solar industry. It’s also an opportunity for LONGi to accelerate its overseas expansion and boost its share of the global market for mono-crystalline products.
About LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd
