HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), revealed that the DEWA’s Green Hydrogen project has produced over 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since production started in May 2021. A bulk of this production was utilized to generate over 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of pure electricity through a hydrogen gas engine, which helped save over 515 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, more than 11 tonnes were delivered to Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) for use in hydrogen-fuelled vehicles at the Service Station of the Future during Expo 2020 Dubai and to support other industrial applications.

“The Green Hydrogen project supports the forward-looking vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to consolidate the competitive advantages of the UAE in the field of hydrogen. The project enhances DEWA’s efforts to support the National Hydrogen Strategy, the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of the energy production capacity from clean sources by 2050. It also supports the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which aims to stimulate the use of sustainable transport in line with the emirate’s strategic objectives to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Al Tayer.

DEWA’s Green Hydrogen project has proven its strategic position in bolstering the UAE’s standing in the international hydrogen market. The UAE is presently in top position in green hydrogen competitiveness, according to reports.

The project is the first in the Middle East and North Africa region to produce green hydrogen from solar power. Built in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, the plant outputs around 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. It also has storage tanks that can store up to 12 hours of hydrogen output. The stored hydrogen can then be used to provide electricity at night via a hydrogen gas motor, offering a capacity of close to 300 kilowatts of electrical energy.

DEWA’s Green Hydrogen project has been conceived for future integration in the energy, transport, and industrial sectors.
