TotalEnergies has officially gone on to inaugurate its largest solar power cluster in Europe, which is located in southern Spain’s Sevilla.
The new facility happens to have five interconnected solar projects, which collectively offer an installed capacity of almost 263 megawatts. This kind of largest solar power cluster in Europe is anticipated to generate almost 515 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity every year, which is enough to meet the energy requirements of more than 150,000 households across Spain. Moreover, the project is all set to decrease carbon emissions by almost 245,000 tons every year, thereby supporting Spain and Europe’s broader climate objectives.
It is well to be noted that a prominent portion of the electricity that will be generated is going to be sold by way of long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), while the remaining portion will be available for the wholesale electricity market. The TotalEnergies project has been recognized as a project of strategic interest by Junta de Andalucia, which is the regional government. Apparently, this development has also brought enough economic advantages to the local area. The construction has involved almost 14 companies, of which more than half are based out of Sevilla, and has also created around 800 direct or even indirect jobs. The installation makes use of 410,000 bifacial solar panels, which are equipped with trackers in order to elevate energy efficiency along with their output.
The senior vice president of renewables at TotalEnergies, Oliver Jouny, said that they warmly thank the Spanish authorities when it comes to both regional and national levels so as to support this largest solar power cluster in Europe, which is contributing to the country’s ambitious 80% of renewables within its mix by 2030. He further said that with their 1700 employees in Spain, they are building a competitive integrated portfolio, which combines both flexible gas-fired and also renewable power plants in order to deliver clean, firm power to their customers. They are also proud to be the fourth-largest provider when it comes to electricity, gas, and related services within Spain, where there are more than 2 million residential and professional customers.
This landmark reflects the broader strategy of TotalEnergies in order to build a diversified as well as competitive energy portfolio. The company is mixing renewable sources like onshore wind, solar, and offshore wind along with flexible energy assets, such as combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT), as well as storage systems in order to provide dependable clean power to its customers. As of March 2025, TotalEnergies has already reached 28 GW of installed gross renewable capacity and is indeed on track so as to attain its objective of 35 GW by the end of this year. Marching forward, the company looks forward to producing over 100 terrawatt-hours of net electricity every year by 2030, thereby enforcing its position as a major player within the global energy shift.
