The construction division of Samsung C&T is speeding up its expansion into the small modular reactor – SMR market in Central as well as Eastern Europe via a partnership with one of the Polish private SMR developers.

Samsung C&T made an announcement on December 14 that it has gone ahead and signed a memorandum of understanding – MoU along with Synthos Green Energy – SGE which is a company leading the SMR projects along with certain clean energy initiatives in Poland and also across Central and Eastern Europe, in order to cooperate on SMR development within Europe. Michal Sołowow, the Chairman of Synthos Green Energy, as well as Rafal Kasprów, the CEO, and Oh Se-chul, the President and CEO of Samsung C&T’s construction division, attended the signing ceremony.

Synthos Green Energy plans to roll out almost 24 SMR units, including the first SMR power plant in Poland, by the early 2030s through using the BWRX-300 tech, which is one of the most advanced SMR designs that is at present available. The company also looks forward to expand SMR projects into neighboring Central as well as Eastern European countries like Hungary, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Romania.

As per the MoU, both the companies are going to cooperate on major early-stage activities that are needed for SMR development across Poland, which includes feasibility studies, site evaluations, and also environmental effect evaluations. Building on this partnership, they look to extend their partnership to SGE’s broader SMR initiatives that are spread across Central and Eastern Europe.

It is well to be noted that the BWRX-300 is a 300 MW-class SMR based on an enhanced boiling water reactor – BWR design which is developed by GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, a joint venture of GE of the United States with Hitachi from Japan. Construction is at present underway in Ontario, Canada, thereby marking the first SMR project in the Western world, with Sweden’s state-owned utility Vattenfall selecting the BWRX-300 as the preferred SMR technology when it comes to the Ringhals nuclear site.

The President and CEO of Samsung C&T’s construction division, Oh Se-chul, remarked that the partnership with Synthos Green Energy is going to serve as a major milestone when it comes to securing a foothold within Poland along with Central and Eastern Europe. He further added that Samsung C&T is going to make utmost use of its worldwide nuclear construction experience in order to strengthen its competitiveness within the SMR sector.

The CEO of Synthos Green Energy, Rafal Kasprów, said that the collaboration goes on to combine Samsung C&T’s global nuclear execution capabilities along with SGE’s SMR business expertise, therefore elevating the viability of the SMR projects across Poland and also enabling the delivery of safe as well as sustainable energy solutions throughout Europe.

Meanwhile, Samsung C&T has also gone ahead and signed a strategic partnership along with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy in October 2025 so as to expand SMR projects in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, and as a matter of fact, has also hosted an SMR supply chain event in Sweden. By way of its latest partnership, Samsung C&T looks forward to further solidifying its position as a major SMR player not just in Sweden but also throughout Central and Eastern Europe.
