ACWA Power of Saudi Arabia and Bapco Energies from Bahrain have inked a joint development agreement โ€“ JDA in order to advance the Saudi Arabia-Bahrain solar power partnership.

The agreement looks to develop a 2.8 GW solar power plant based out of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, which is integrated by way of large-scale battery energy storage and hence supports the clean energy goals of both countries.

The announcement was made during the Saudi-Bahraini Coordination Council meeting, which was held in December 2025.

The solar power plant is anticipated to be delivered in multiple phases, and apparently, all the electricity that is going to be generated by the plant is going to be delivered to the load center of Bapco Energies thatโ€™s located in Bahrain.

This will support national energy requirements of Bahrain and also speed up its transition towards renewable energy.

The vice-chair and managing director of ACWA Power, Raad Al Saady, said that this solar power partnership through the joint agreement with Bapco Energies is indeed a testament to the robust bilateral ties that exist between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and also their shared commitment to a much more sustainable as well as a secure energy future.

Apparently, the project aligns not just with the Vision 2030 of Saudi Arabia but also with the Economic Vision 2030 of Bahrain, along with its national ambitions, in order to expand clean energy and also speed up its net-zero pathway.

He added that they do take this opportunity to extend their sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Energy in Saudi Arabia for its continued guidance. ACWA Power, as per him, is indeed proud to help advance a project that goes on to strengthen the regional energy security and also accelerates the transition to renewable power.

It is worth noting that the project is also anticipated to strengthen the role of Saudi Arabia as an energy export hub and is also a part of the commitment made by Bapco Energies to the Bahrain National Energy Strategy.

The strategy also looks forward to diversifying the national energy mix in order to include renewables and make sure of secure as well as competitive access to energy.

Mark Thomas, the Bapco Energies group CEO, said that this agreement goes on to mark yet another important landmark in their journey towards energy diversification as well as regional collaboration.

Through working alongside ACWA Power, Bapco Energies is going ahead and taking that bold step in order to make sure of long-term energy security for the Kingdom of Bahrain while at the same time also unleashing the power of renewables.

Through facilitating cross-border clean energy flow, this JDA is said to go ahead and deepen the energy partnerships all through the Gulf Cooperation Council.

It was in September 2025 that the Ministry of Energy of Syria, along with ACWA Power, went on to enter into a JDA so as to explore the potential development of almost 2.5 GW of solar and wind energy projects within the country.
