ACCIONA Energía has completed the repowering of the Tahivilla wind farm (84.4MW) in Tarifa (Spain), with the facility now entering full commissioning.

The project involved dismantling 98 older turbines and installing 13 next-generation units in their place. As a result of the upgrade, annual energy production has increased by 72%, reflecting higher installed capacity and improved operational performance. The wind farm continues to operate with the same export capacity as before the modernization.

Tahivilla wind farm is expected to produce 254GWh of electricity each year. This output will help prevent the emission of approximately 108,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

The repowering has been supported by a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) secured with a private customer. The long-term contract has provided revenue stability, enabling the project to move forward and covering part of the investment required to modernize the site. In addition, ACCIONA Energía received €8.3 million in funding from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme.

According to the company, the repowering of Tahivilla generated more than 1,000 jobs during the dismantling of the former wind farm and the construction of the new installation. The number of turbines at the site has been significantly reduced, improving land use efficiency and enhancing environmental integration. The upgrade also extends the wind farm’s operational life and maximizes the use of the available wind resource.

ACCIONA Energía noted that, where appropriate, repowering can offer several advantages compared with building a new wind farm from scratch. Such projects often benefit from stronger social acceptance in areas already familiar with renewable energy developments. They also typically involve a lower environmental impact by reusing existing infrastructure and reducing turbine numbers, while shortening development timelines. In addition, costs and investment risks are generally lower.
