China Nuclear Engineering Corporation Limited (CNEC) has started pouring concrete at Unit 5 of the Yangjiang nuclear power plant (NPP) located in Guangdong province.

The Yangjiang 5 unit will have advanced CPR-1000+ pressurized water reactor, World Nuclear News reported.

The resulting high rate of work at the site has induced planners to delay first concrete at the unit by a month to avoid having an impact on the late-stage construction work at Units 1 and 2.

The first four units at the plant consists of CPR-1000 pressurized water reactors.ย Construction of Unit 1 at the Yangjiang NPP was started in December 2008, with work on Unit 2 beginning in 2009, Unit 3 in 2010 and Unit 4 in late 2012.

The company said that Yangjiang’s final reactor Unit 6 will also be a CPR-1000+, which is estimated to begin construction in 2014.

The reactors at Yangjiang are expected to be operational by 2018, with a total capacity of around 6,100MWe.
