A consortium, which is led by Masdar, the Abu Dhabi-based developer, has inked a PPA for a 200 MW floating solar project located in Malaysia.

The Chereh Dam solar plant is going to be developed by Masdar in partnership with Citaglobal as well as Tiza Global, the Malaysian partners.

Apparently, the consortium entered into the PPA with the national utility company of Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

The project, estimated at more than $208 million, is going to cover an area of almost 950 acres, or 384 hectares, and go on to offer enough energy to power more than 100,000 homes. According to Masdar, it is going to be financed by way of a non-recourse project finance structure having participation from the international lenders.

The 200 MW floating solar project, notably, was awarded under the fifth large-scale solar program of Malaysia, the results of which were first revealed in September 2025 after Masdar achieved the lowest tariff when it comes to the category of floating solar.

The Chereh Dam project also goes on to mark the entry of Masdar into the Malaysian market. It is the inaugural project with the agreement of a 10 GW renewable energy roadmap between Masdar and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority in 2023. The developer is also making progress with a feasibility study for a large-scale floating solar installation located at the Murum reservoir in Sarawak, which is going to be in collaboration with Sarawak Energy as well as Gentari.

A statement from Masdar goes on to confirm that the project is going to be the largest floating solar asset located in Southeast Asia once it is operational. The company has already rolled out large-scale floating PV within the region through its 145 MW Cirata floating PV plant that’s located in West Java, Indonesia.

The Chief Executive Officer of Madar, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, went on to add that the project is the largest floating solar asset globally to date by the company, and through leveraging their experience in terms of delivering utility-scale solutions across the world, they can offer affordable as well as secure clean energy to the Malaysian people.
