TotalEnergies has secured a major expansion of its U.S. renewables portfolio after signing TotalEnergies solar PPAs for Google covering 1 GW of new solar capacity dedicated to powering data centers in Texas.

The 15-year agreements relate to two solar projects currently under development by TotalEnergies. These include the 805 MW Wichita project and the 195 MW Mustang Creek project, both located west of Dallas. Construction at both sites is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year, with combined generation expected to reach roughly 28 TWh over the lifetime of the contracts.

Marc-Antoine Pignon, Vice President Renewables U.S. for TotalEnergies, said the deals represent the largest renewable power purchase agreement volume the company has executed in the U.S. market to date.

โ€œThis highlights TotalEnergiesโ€™ strategy to deliver tailored renewable energy solutions that support the decarbonization goals of digital players, particularly data centers,โ€ Pignon added. โ€œThrough this PPA, TotalEnergies is also addressing the challenges of land availability and power supply for data centers by enabling large-scale colocation opportunities.โ€

The TotalEnergies solar PPAs for Google follow additional renewable agreements linked to Googleโ€™s U.S. expansion. In January, Clearway Energy, a California-based renewable developer that is 50% owned by TotalEnergies, finalized three separate PPAs totaling 1.17 GW to support Google data centers across Missouri, Texas, and West Virginia.

Will Conkling, Googleโ€™s Director of Clean Energy and Power, said the company prioritizes maintaining a stable and affordable electricity system as it continues to expand its infrastructure footprint. โ€œOur agreement with TotalEnergies adds necessary new generation to the local system, boosting the amount of affordable and reliable power supply available to serve the entire region,โ€ he said.

The U.S. remains the worldโ€™s largest data center market, with more than 5,400 facilities as of March last year, according to Statista. Rising power demand from AI and cloud computing has increased interest in long-term solar PPAs, with federal policymakers also signaling support for large-scale data center developments powered partly by solar and energy storage.
