Siemens has initiated trial run for the BorWin2 direct current link in co-ordination with power grid operator TenneT in German North Sea.

The offshore grid connection is expected to go into controlled operation in the initial months of 2015.

Power generated from the already completed 400MW Global Tech 1 offshore wind farm will be transported via the grid link.

The link is also scheduled to transport power from the 400MW Veja Mate; however, this development has been postponed after its original owner Bard and developer Windreich became insolvent, reports Rechargenews.com.

UK’s Laidlaw Capital Group recently purchased Veja Mate.

The trial run has been initiated after several successful test runs by Siemens. The firm had installed the BorWin2 platform in the summer around 100km north-west of the North Sea island of Borkum.

Consortium partner and cable expert Prysmian was responsible for the installation of the two 200km submarine cables for the BorWin2 direct link.

Siemens will use high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) technology for the connection to ensure efficient transmission, it said.

This link is the fifth among the North Sea grid connection projects handled by Siemens for TenneT. The other four are in advanced stages of development and are likely to be active by 2015.
