US-based utility company Southern Company has acquired 139MW solar project in association with Turner Renewable Energy from First Solar to increase its solar energy capacity by two-fold.
Southern Company has acquired the Campo Verde project through its subsidiary, marking its fifth acquisition in partnership with Turner Renewable Energy.
The Campo Verde solar project is on a 1,443-acre site in Imperial County in the US state of California. It is scheduled to commence its commercial operations by fall 2013.
Commenting on the purchase, Southern Company chairman, president and CEO Thomas A. Fanning noted that the company is developing solutions, not rhetoric.
“By acquiring the Campo Verde Solar Project – our largest solar installation to date – we’re more than doubling our solar capacity and increasing the diversity of our generation fleet,” added Fanning.
Sempra Energy’s subsidiary San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) will procure the electricity output from the plant through a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Meanwhile, the company partnering with Turner has previously acquired four solar projects including 30MW Cimarron solar facility, 20MW Apex solar plant, 30MW Spectrum solar facility and the 2.5MW Granville solar project.
