A specialist manufacturer of critical aerospace hardware, including high-grade screws and fasteners, is elevating its internal processing standards. The company has invested in a compact, high-performance vacuum furnace from SECO/WARWICK, equipped with High-Pressure Gas Quenching (HPGQ) capabilities to meet the rigorous demands of the aviation sector.

In the aerospace industry, the margin for error is non-existent. Every component, down to the smallest fastener, must endure extreme conditions. To ensure these parts meet strict metallurgical standards, the manufacturer selected a solution that balances a small footprint with industrial-grade power. The new installation features a working chamber measuring 16x16x24 inches (400x400x600 mm), making it an ideal fit for the client’s in-house hardening plant while allowing for the efficient treatment of multiple component batches simultaneously.

A Broad Portfolio of Thermal Solutions

The choice of equipment reflects the specific metallurgical needs of steel and alloy fasteners. While SECO/WARWICK is globally renowned for large-scale solutions—such as systems designed for the Controlled Atmosphere Brazing of aluminum used in heat exchanger manufacturing—this project required the distinct precision of their Vacuum prowess.

The selected Vector® High Vacuum furnace is engineered for versatility, capable of executing both multipurpose and dedicated applications essential for flight-critical hardware.

Meeting Strict Aerospace Standards

The furnace architecture is specifically designed to adhere to the stringent norms of aviation heat treatment. Key technical features include:

  • Dual-Gas Capability: The system operates using both Nitrogen and Argon. An additional Argon partial-pressure system was integrated to ensure absolute process cleanliness, preventing surface oxidation during treatment.
  • Temperature Precision: The round heating chamber offers exceptional temperature uniformity of +/-9°F (+/-5°C), ensuring consistent results across the entire load.
  • Wide Thermal Range: It features efficient convection heating up to 1590°F (850°C), with a maximum operating temperature reaching 2192°F (1200°C).

Rapid Cooling for Superior Hardness

One of the client’s primary requirements was the ability to achieve rapid cooling rates to lock in specific material properties.

“The Client required very short cooling times, which are possible with the use of a 15 bar abs gas blower,” explains Maciej Korecki, Vice President of the Vacuum Business Segment at SECO/WARWICK Group. “Our advantage is that it is a proven solution—our standard technology but adapted to the partner’s specific requirements. The Vector line offers wide personalization possibilities, which significantly reduces project costs and ensures a faster implementation time.”

This installation demonstrates how “standard” industrial solutions can be effectively tailored to niche applications, allowing manufacturers to maintain high throughput and quality control within their own facilities.
