Denmark-based petroleum and natural gas producer DONG Energy’s oil and gas business, DONG E&P has been awarded six new oil and gas blocks in two licences, offshore Faroe Islands, as part of the Open Door Licence Round.

Located in the Faroe-Shetland Basin, west of the producing British fields Foinaven and Schiehallion, the company will operate the new blocks by holding a 100% interest.

The Licence period for both licences, which cover an area of about 900km² is 7 years. DONG E&P, which also secured a licence in the UK 27th Licence Round, has been engaged in a number of licences offshore the region as an exploration partner, including the first oil discovery in Marjun.

DONG Energy exploration director Søren Blegvad Andersen said that the awarded blocks are located in a basin, where it has identified a number of attractive prospects close to existing fields.

“We look forward to unravel the prospectivity of this area over the coming years, using new 3D seismic data and special in-house processing techniques,” Andersen added.

DONG Energy exploration activities head and senior vice president Jan Terje Edvardsen said, “This award is a result of our long-term exploration strategy, where the Atlantic Margin plays an important role for future growth. Based on our continued exploration efforts we have a leading position in this region.”
