American Electric Power subsidiary AEP Energy and Global Energy Generation (Doral) have signed a long-term renewable energy purchase agreement for a solar project in Indiana, US.

The 480MWdc Mammoth Solar 1 project is the first phase of the 1.65GWdc Mammoth project, which is being developed by Doral.

AEP Energy president Greg Hall said: “AEP Energy is focused on providing customers with integrated, carbon-free energy supplies that deliver long-term price stability while benefitting the environment and surrounding communities.

“Agreements like this one with Doral demonstrate how our innovative energy solutions can support the development of new renewable clean energy resources, boost local economies and help our customers power their homes and businesses with clean, reliable energy.”

The solar project is being developed in an area of more than 12,000 acres in Starke and Pulaski counties.

The investment is expected to create several jobs and benefit the economy.

Construction works for the Mammoth Solar 1 project will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, with commercial operations expected by the second quarter of 2023.

Upon completion, the project will offset 40,000t of greenhouse gas emissions and have the capacity to save one billion gallons of irrigation well water a year.

Doral Renewable Energy Resources Group CEO Yaki Noyman said: “Doral is continuing its rapid growth in the region. This is another significant milestone in our strategy to develop, execute and operate quality large-scale utility renewable energy projects.”

Doral was founded in 2019 as a joint venture between Doral Group and Clean Energy Generation. The company currently has more than 3GWdc worth of projects under development.
