Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been selected to supply the electro-mechanical equipment for the 720MW Mangdechhu hydroelectric project in Bhutan.

Scope of the contract encompasses manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of the electro-mechanical equipment for the 4x170MW plant.

Implemented under a bilateral agreement between the Indian government and the Royal Government of Bhutan, the contract is valued at $139m.

The company will supply four Pelton turbines and generators of 170MW capacity each, along with associated equipment, manufactured at BHEL’s Bhopal facility.

BHEL will also supply a control system, to be manufactured and supplied by the company’s electronic division at Bangalore.

The order marks the third major contract for the company from Bhutan, following similar electro-mechanical equipment supplied for the 1,200MW Punatsangchhu-I and 1,020MW Punatsangchhu-II projects.
