The South African Department of Energy has selected one of the most prominent wind energy contractors to build five new wind farm projects in the country.

The contract is part of the South African government’s second round of renewable energy tenders and represents a combined capacity of 297 MW. The five projects are West Coast 1(94 MW), SA Tsitsikamma (95.33 MW), Grahamstown (24.60 MW), Grassridge (61.50 Mw) and Chaba (21.53 MW).

Combined with the first round of tenders already awarded, Vestas has been chosen for seven projects in the country overall with a total capacity of 435.10 MW.

Six months have been allocated as a period in which Vestas and the project developments must reach financial close which must involve the negotiation and finalisation of turbine supply, service and maintenance contracts.

Vestas has been active in South Africa for ten years. Across the globe, the company owns 46,000 wind turbines in 69 countries which help to reduce carbon emissions by around 50 million tonnes per year.
