Greenpeace International and the Global Wind Energy Council have projected that the global wind power market could triple over the next eight years.

The findings were reported in the fourth edition of the Global Wind Energy Outlook – the bi-annual report on the industry’s future.

According to the report, wind power may supply enough electricity to cater to 12% of the demand by 2020 while decreasing nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO2 emissions a year.

By 2030, wind power is set to account for 20% of global electricity supply.

Global Wind Energy Council secretary general Steve Sawyer noted that wind energy will play a major role in our energy future.

“But for wind to reach its full potential, governments need to act quickly to address the climate crisis, while there’s still time,” Sawyer said.

Greenpeace senior energy expert Sven Teske added, “The most important ingredient for the long term success of the wind industry is stable, long term policy, sending a clear signal to investors about the government’s vision for the scope and potential for the technology.”
