South Korean shipbuilding company Hyundai Heavy Industries has awarded an offshore contract to Netherlands-based engineering, procurement, and construction company Chicago Bridge & Iron (CB&I) Company, to develop Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen field in Norway.

As part of the contract, worth $180m, CB&I will provide detailed engineering design and procurement services for the spar topside of Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen field development project.

The Luva (Aasta Hansteen) gas field situated 186 miles offshore in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, will be developed using a spar platform.

Chicago Bridge & Iron executive vice president and chief operating officer Lasse Petterson said, “The award builds on our extensive work history engineering offshore topsides and our successful track record on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.”

Upon the commencement of operations, the production platform will be able to produce 812 million cubic feet of gas a day and store 160,000 barrels of condensate. CB&I will begin its work in the first quarter of 2013.
