UAE’s Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has applied for the construction license application (CLA) for Barakah Units 3 and 4 in Abu Dhabi.
ENEC has filed for the CLA for Units 3 & 4 with the United Arab Emirates Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). In July 2012, the organization had received approval of the CLA for Units 1 & 2.
Located in Barakah in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi, the four APR1400 nuclear units are being built by ENEC. The first unit is scheduled for completion in 2017.
Commenting on the move, ENEC chief executive Mohamed Al Hammadi said it marks another significant milestone in the firm’s program as it works toward delivering ‘safe’ and ‘reliable’ nuclear energy to the UAE.
“The team has worked diligently to deliver to our regulator a comprehensive, high quality application that draws from all of the experience we have gained – through our reference plants in Korea, the lessons learned from Fukushima, and our own experience with the first application process for Units 1 & 2,” Al Hammadi added.
“We remain committed to achieving the highest standards of safety and quality in all aspects of our program, and will continue to work under FANR’s strict regulations.”
The FANR will thoroughly review the CLA. The review process for Units 1 & 2 included over 1800 requests for more information.
