Spanish renewable power developer Gestamp has commenced operations at two photovoltaic facilities in Peru.

The Tacna farm in Tacna and Panamericana project in Moquegua, have a 20MW capacity each and will provide electricity to the local area through the National Interconnected Electrical System (SEIN).

As per the 2010 tendering agreement with the Peruvian government, Gestamp Solar and Solarpark Corporation secured the contract to jointly develop the solar facilities.

Gestamp Solar CEO Jorge Barredo stated that the two solar plants ensure electricity supply for the region without having an impact on their prices.

“They also promote a new regional industry and strengthen local jobs in other industries,” said Barredo adding that the project cements its presence in Latin America.

The contract stipulates that the government will procure 98GWh of electricity produced by the farms over a 20-year term.

Electricity generated by the plants is expected to meet the requirements of over 70.000 homes and reduce 50,000 tons of carbon emissions per annum.
