HD Construction Equipment has completed a new engine and battery pack production plant in Gunsan, South Korea, to expand its capacity for defence engines, power generation engines and commercial vehicle battery packs. The company aims to increase engine sales from approximately 1.3 trillion won in 2025 to 2.5 trillion won (USD 1.7 billion) by 2030.

The company held a completion ceremony on 28th October at its Gunsan campus in the Gunsan National Industrial Complex. Approximately 200 people attended, including HD Hyundai Vice Chairman Cho Young-cheol, HD Construction Equipment President Moon Jae-young, Jeonbuk State Governor Lee Won-taek, National Assembly member Kim Eui-kyeom and Gunsan Mayor Kim Jae-joon.

New Plant Expands Production Capacity

Built over approximately two years at a cost of 116.8 billion won, the HD Construction Equipment Engine Plant occupies a 62,700-square-metre site. It features assembly robots, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), equipment designed to detect quality defects in advance and an integrated control tower to improve production efficiency and quality.

The facility can produce 120 tank defence engines and 1,250 ultra-large power generation engines rated between 1 and 3 megawatts of electrical output annually. Its battery pack production capacity reaches 1,460 megawatt-hours per year, equivalent to approximately 9,400 electric buses.

Production Roadmap for Power Generation Engines

HD Construction Equipment plans to begin mass production of its 37-litre, 1.3-megawatt power generation engine in the first half of 2027. A 77-litre, 3-megawatt model is scheduled to follow in 2028, with a 50-litre, 2-megawatt model planned for 2029.

The company will maintain tank defence engine production in line with rising medium- and long-term volumes. It also plans to expand battery pack supply for commercial vehicles, construction equipment and industrial applications.

At the completion ceremony, the company unveiled the DX37, a 37-litre ultra-large power generation engine. It also renamed its engine business division the Power Solution Business Division and introduced the slogan โ€œPowering the Next,โ€ reflecting its focus on engines and battery packs.

Engine Sales Target for 2030

HD Construction Equipment plans to use the new HD Construction Equipment Engine Plant to support its target of increasing engine sales to 2.5 trillion won by 2030, from approximately 1.3 trillion won in 2025.

โ€œWe will realize future technologies in response to new energy demand and take the lead in creating new business opportunities,โ€ Moon said.

โ€œThrough this, we will become a company that grows together with the local community,โ€ he added.
