The Canadian arm of British energy firm Renewable Energy Systems (RES) has commenced the construction of the 270MW South Kent Wind project.

The $700m-project located in Chatham-Kent, Ontario is being developed by Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Energy Group.

The South Kent Wind project comprises 124 Siemens 2.3MW turbines manufactured in the province, and towers from facilities in Windsor, along with blades from Tillsonburg.

RES Canada development vice president Peter Clibbon expressed pleasure over its selection as the construction manager for the biggest wind project ever in Ontario.

“This project is a milestone for RES Canada and for clean energy production in Ontario,” added Clibbon.

Following its completion, the project is expected to meet the power requirements of 100,000 households of the province.

Samsung C&T executive vice president Yoon-Gyung Boo stated: “We are pleased to partner with RES Canada on this project, which will create hundreds of new construction and manufacturing jobs for Ontarians.”

RES Canada added that the South Kent Wind is the tenth renewable project for the company with total power capacity to 631MW of wind.
