Repsol has hit a major technological milestone by producing gasoline made entirely from renewable sources on an industrial scale. This was achieved at its Tarragona complex and highlights Spain’s and the company’s leading role in the energy transition
This fully renewable gasoline is compatible with existing vehicles and does not require any modifications for use. According to Repsol, the fuel can cut net CO2 emissions by over 70% compared with conventional gasoline. Nexa 95 Gasoline, the company’s 100% renewable 95-octane product, is currently available at 20 service stations across Madrid and Catalonia. Repsol aims to have the fuel at 30 stations by the end of this year, adding cities like Tarragona, Valencia, Zaragoza, and Bilbao.
With this launch, Repsol adds to its lineup of renewable fuels, joining the already available Nexa Diesel of 100% renewable origin. The renewable gasoline development illustrates that decarbonizing transport using renewable liquid fuels is a practical solution for combustion engine vehicles, gasoline, diesel, or hybrid, which still account for 97% of the vehicle fleet in Spain and Europe and represent 87% of new vehicle sales in Spain this year.
Repsol highlights the importance of 100% renewable fuels in achieving climate objectives set by Spain and the European Union. The company stresses that EU proposals to ban combustion engines by 2035 have contributed to an aging vehicle fleet in Spain, which now averages 14.5 years in age, with 8.5 million vehicles, nearly a third of the total, older than 20 years. To speed up the use of renewable fuels, Repsol calls for long-term targets like those already set for aviation and maritime, along with a supportive tax framework. The company says these steps would give the certainty needed to boost investment in more efficient engine technologies.
