ABB and its consortium partner Bondfield Construction have been selected by Canadian Solar Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Solar, for a 100MWac solar PV plant at the Grand Renewable Energy project in Canada.

Under the contract, ABB will provide a balance of system solution including a broad range of power and automation products, and will be responsible for engineering, electrical installation, commissioning, and performance testing of the plant.

Bondfield will be in charge of all aspects of the civil works, including the foundation design and installation, along with all mechanical installation and assembly.

Canadian Solar is responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction of the plant under an agreement signed with Grand Renewable Solar, an arm of Samsung Renewable Energy, in June 2013.

Canadian Solar chairman and CEO Shawn Qu said the company selected ABB and Bondfield through an extensive evaluation process, which took into account numerous criteria, including direct operating experience in Canada, total solution offerings, and examples of prior turnkey construction work on this larger scale.

“This is a major project for all parties involved, with ideal partners in Samsung and Connor Clark & Lunn Infrastructure.

Located in Haldimand County, Ontario, the plant, which is likely to be operational in 2015, will generate around 165,000MWh of electricity annually, enough to power around 13,750 homes.

The project will feature 440,000 Canadian Solar CS6X modules, 100x1MW transformers and 200 inverters of 500kW each; a transformer substation consisting of a solar transformer (65/86/108MVA); and associated ancillary equipment, systems and technologies, switchgear, control and monitoring equipment and underground cabling.

The solar power plant is part of the 250MW Grand Renewable Energy Park, which is being financed by Connor Clark & Lunn Infrastructure and developed by Samsung Renewable Energy.

In June 2012, Samsung has received renewable energy approval from the Ministry of the Environment for the renewable energy park, will also feature the 150MW Grand Renewable wind project, along with the solar project.
