It is well to be noted that the share of renewable as well as clean energy across Spain’s overall electricity production happened to reach a record 65.2% in March 2024, the highest renewable output ever since the records began, said Red Electrica de Espana- REE, the Spanish power grid operator, in its provisional monthly report on April 2, 2024.

Notably, in February 2024, the renewables share of Spain happened to be almost 59.6%.

Renewables, which also happens to include large hydro, went ahead and generated 14,591 GWh in March 2024, thereby enjoying their highest ever contribution when it comes to a monthly parameter. This went on to represent a 15.6% surge as compared to 2023, said REE.

It is worth noting that top power generators in the Spanish system and that too for six months in a row, wind farms comprised 27.1% of the mix. Wind power production went on to touch 6,061 GWh in March 2024, dipping by 9.5% on the year.

The fact is that it was the boost in hydropower output, which went up 141.6% year-on-year, that indeed contributed the most to Spain’s surging renewables share in March 2024, as per the REE’s data.

Apparently, hydro made up 22% of the monthly power mix, whereas solar photovoltaic happened to have a share of 13.6%.

Notably, Spain’s gross demand when it comes to electricity was estimated at 20,413 GWh in March 2024, which was down by 0.3% year-on-year. While taking temperature as well as working hours into consideration, Spain’s national electricity demand went on to surge by 1.9% as compared to March 2023.

When it comes to the first quarter of 2024, the overall demand happened to be 62,484 GWh, thereby marking a depletion of 0.6% year-on-year.
