Renewable energy company EDF EN Canada in collaboration with Enbridge (ENB) has launched a 150MW Massif du Sud wind project in Quebec, Canada.
Built with a total investment of $350m, the project, which features 75 wind turbines supplied by Repower, is estimated to produce electricity enough to cater nearly 35,000 Quebec homes.
Construction of Massif du Sud commenced in November 2011, while commercial operations began on 18 January 2013.
EDF EN Canada engineering and construction vice president Benoit Rigal said that the company has developed the project within 14 months in compliance with the regional park requirements and managing transportation of turbine components is an accomplishment to be recognized.
“This valuable project is another step forward to advance the growth of EDF EN in Québec and Canada,” added Rigal.
Massif du Sud was built as a part of seven projects that EDF EN Canada secured through Hydro-Quebec initiative. The company aims to develop the projects totaling power capacity of 1,003.2MW in the province over the next three years.
EDF EN Canada project development director Alex Couture noted: “Throughout the 20-year contract with Hydro-Quebec, the municipalities concerned by these projects will receive a combined annual contribution of over $300,000.
“The Corporation d’aménagement du parc régional du Massif du Sud will also receive an annual contribution of about $75,000.”
EDF EN Canada has employed its operation and maintenance subsidiary EDF Renewable Services to provide long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) services.
