Chinese energy construction firm PowerChina has joined hands with Ukrainian developer WindFarm to build an 800-MW wind farm in Ukraine without using any state subsidies.

The parties have signed a joint implementation agreement last week, pledging to invest more than USD 1 billion (EUR 857.8m) in the scheme, WindFarm announced. It explained that implementing such a project without green tariffs from the government is a new approach for the Ukrainian wind sector. The output of the complex will be sold on a merchant basis.

The huge wind park is planned to be installed in the Mangush and Nikolsky districts of Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine. It will be the largest one of its kind in the country, once completed. While no exact timeframe was given for the project’s completion, WindFarm and state-owned PowerChina said that their experience will enable them to realise the project “in the shortest time possible.”

According to a report by the Kyiv Post, WindFarm will deal with all required paperwork, while PowerChina will take care of installing the capacity. WindFarm is expected to sign an interconnection agreement with state-run power company Ukrenergo.

WindFarm noted it has developed around 1.3 GW of wind projects so far, more than 400 MW of which are already operational.
