Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., has begun commercial operations at its 200 MWp Villameca solar project in Castilla y Leรณn, Spain. The facility expands the companyโs solar power portfolio in the country and supports Spainโs clean energy transition. The project is expected to produce approximately 359,172 MWh of electricity annually, enough to meet the needs of more than 100,000 homes.
Villameca is projected to prevent around 57,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. According to the projectโs estimates, this reduction is equivalent to taking more than 12,000 internal combustion engine vehicles off the road. The facility adds to Recurrent Energyโs expanding solar capacity in Spain, where the company has also inaugurated the 426 MWp Rey Solar project in Andalucรญa. Its 315 MWp Tordesillas project, also located in Castilla y Leรณn, is expected to connect to the grid later in 2026.
With these developments, Recurrent Energy expects its total operational solar capacity in Spain to reach approximately 1 GW by the end of 2026.
Recurrent Energy’s CEO, Dylan Marx, described Villameca solar project’s commercial launch as an important milestone that reinforces its position in the European market. He also highlighted its commitment to creating long-term value for local communities, social responsibility and biodiversity protection.
The solar project received the Union Espaรฑola Fotovoltaica (UNEF) Seal of Excellence during permitting and construction, recognising its alignment with sustainability standards. Through its Community CaRE programme, Recurrent Energy has supported local communities through improvements to educational facilities, community infrastructure and social initiatives.
Environmental measures at Villameca include habitat restoration, planting native vegetation and protecting wildlife. The project also incorporates nesting structures, bat boxes and insect hotels to support local ecosystems. These measures form part of its broader approach to responsible project development.
Along with the solar project, Recurrent Energy also plans to integrate battery energy storage systems into Villameca. The proposed hybrid configuration is expected to improve grid stability and support decarbonisation by pairing solar generation with energy storage. Separately, the company has announced the grid connection of Montalto La Viola, one of Italyโs first solar-plus-storage hybrid projects, extending its focus on integrated renewable energy solutions across Europe.
