An agreement between Ontario Power Generation as well as the New York Power Authority goes on to establish a framework for partnership on the development of advanced nuclear energy tech, while at the same time, the leaders of New York along with Ontario have inked a declaration of intent when it comes to the cooperation so as to work together to advance the development of nuclear power.

As per the memorandum of understanding, Ontario Power Generation – OPG and the New York Power Authority – NYPA are going to make utmost use of the global nuclear leadership of Ontario for an advanced nuclear energy tech and its deployment, which includes the likes of large-scale reactors as well as small modular reactors – SMRs in order to meet the rising electricity demand and, at the same time, safeguard the long-term energy security. NYPA and OPG are going to share the information and make use of their respective expertise along with resources in order to advance technological innovation, elevate the understanding of nuclear financing as well as economics, and also support the workforce development initiatives that are required to help the development of advanced nuclear facilities throughout New York and Ontario. They will also look out for new opportunities to upgrade electricity trade between both Ontario and New York in order to enhance dependability and decrease emissions, the New York Power Authority remarked.

The declaration of intent, which has been signed by New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, goes on to take into account the shared history as well as the values of the US state along with the Canadian province, which share an international border.

According to Hochul, both New York and Ontario indeed have quite a proud tradition of trade and cooperation as well as a bond that cannot be broken, and this first-of-its-kind agreement goes on to represent a bold step forward in their relationship and also New York’s pursuit to have a clean energy future. Through partnering with Ontario Power Generation and also its extensive nuclear experience, New York is indeed going ahead and positioning itself at the forefront when it comes to advanced nuclear technology deployment, therefore making sure that they have safe, reliable, and affordable as well as carbon-free energy, which is going to help power the jobs of tomorrow.

As per Ford, right from building the first small modular reactors in the G7 to creating the first large-scale nuclear facilities in decades, Ontario is very proud to be the leader in nuclear innovation, and by working together with New York, they are going ahead and creating good-paying jobs, growing their respective economies, and also rolling out clean, affordable power for the families and businesses on both sides of the border, and that too for generations to come.

In June 2025, Hochul directed the NYPA – which is the public electric utility of the state to develop a minimum of 1 GWe of advanced nuclear capacity in upstate New York and in early December 2025 went on to announce USD 40 million of funding for the next four years in order to develop the workforce that is required to support the planned rollout. Meanwhile, in Ontario, OPG is also working on the construction of four SMRs located at the Darlington New Nuclear Project and also on the potential construction of new large-scale nuclear capacity.

According to Nicolle Butcher, the OPG President and CEO, they construct the first grid-scale SMR of G6 and continue on the engagement in terms of potential for new large-scale generation at their Wesleyville site located in Port Hope, and they look forward to building on their long-standing relationship along with NYPA. Butcher added that they and NYPA are indeed going to share the expertise and collaborate in ways that would be advantageous to both of their jurisdictions as they advance the development when it comes to nuclear technologies.
