Carbon Pricing and Its Long-Term Impact on Power Generation Economics

The implementation of robust carbon pricing mechanisms is fundamentally altering the financial landscape of the energy sector. By internalizing the environmental costs of emissions, these policies are shifting the competitive advantage from fossil fuels to low-carbon alternatives, reshaping investment strategies, and redefining the long-term economic viability of power generation technologies globally.

Repurposing Legacy Power Infrastructure for Low-Carbon Energy Networks

The transition to a sustainable energy future does not require the wholesale destruction of existing systems. By creatively repurposing legacy power infrastructure for low-carbon energy networks, nations can accelerate the deployment of hydrogen and carbon capture technologies while significantly reducing the capital expenditure and environmental impact associated with building entirely new transmission and storage systems.

Balancing Grid Reliability with Deep Power Sector Decarbonisation

Maintaining a constant and reliable flow of electricity while transitioning away from traditional fossil fuels represents one of the greatest engineering feats of the modern era. This analysis explores the strategic deployment of flexible assets and the integration of carbon-neutral firm power to ensure that sustainability goals do not compromise the fundamental stability of the global energy network.

Air Liquide Engineering & Construction has signed an agreement with Doosan Heavy Industries to support the construction of a liquid hydrogen plant in Changwon, South Korea as an enabler of clean transport development in the country.

As part of the agreement, Air Liquide will provide the engineering and procurement of the Hydrogen Liquefier, bringing its extensive experience in the design, engineering and operation of ultra low temperature liquefaction plants.

The plant will be built within the grounds of Doosan’s site in Changwon and will be able to produce 5 tons of liquid hydrogen per day to service hydrogen charging stations nationwide once in operation. The first industrial hydrogen production is envisaged in early 2023.

Hydrogen is one of the solutions to the environmental challenges of clean transportation: reduction of greenhouse gases, of pollution in cities, and of dependency on fossil fuels. For more than 50 years, Air Liquide has been developing unique expertise in the mastery of the entire hydrogen chain (production, storage, and distribution).

South Korea is amongst the leading countries in the development of hydrogen as a clean energy source. This new liquefier is in line with the government plan to considerably densify the network of hydrogen stations in the country with as much as 310 stations and more than 67,000 hydrogen vehicles across the country by 2022.

David Maloney, Vice President and Chairman of Air Liquide Engineering & Construction stated “We are proud to partner with Dooosan and contribute to the development of the liquid hydrogen plant in South Korea to support the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Drawing on our more than 50 years of experience in hydrogen, we provide our customers with state-of-the-art technologies and solutions that enable delivery of such important projects to contribute to the development of clean mobility and a more sustainable future.”
