India-based energy consultant Enzen Global Ltd has selected Bombora Wave Power Pty Ltd and its wave farm technology for a project off the coast of the Spanish island of Lanzarote.

In the first phase of the project, Bombora will install an array of the 1.5-MW mWave device with a total grid-connected capacity of up to 4 MW, the Australian marine energy specialist said Thursday. The submerged structure is installed on the sea floor at an angle to the incoming waves, according to Bomboraโ€™s website. Its operation will not affect the island coastline nor marine traffic. The wave farm will supply clean electricity to Lanzarote, which today largely depends on diesel fuel for power.

“Enzen and Bombora are now engaging with the local supply chain in Lanzarote to deliver the project with Bombora providing specialist engineering support from our European headquarters in Wales,” said Sam Leighton, managing director of the Australian company.

The project, coordinated with the Lanzarote governing authority, is a follow-up on Bomboraโ€™s pilot currently carried out in the Marine Energy Testing Area off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales. The pilot project, due to be finalised next year, will run concurrently with the consenting process for the Lanzarote farm.
