Recurrent Energy, a global developer and operator of solar and energy storage assets, has finalized the sale of two standalone French BESS projects to BW ESS. This transaction represents the first collaboration between the two companies and marks the formal entry of BW ESS into the French energy market.
Project Details and Regional Impact
The portfolio includes the Baixas project in the Pyrรฉnรฉes-Orientales department and the Coquainvilliers project in Calvados. Each site features a capacity of 100 MW / 400 MWh, contributing a combined 200 MW / 800 MWh of flexible capacity to the French electricity system. Both French BESS projects were developed with a focus on transmission-level grid connections and minimal expected network constraints.
Development and Transition Phases
Recurrent Energy managed the full development cycle for these assets, including land acquisition, grid connection negotiations, permitting, and local stakeholder engagement. Under the current agreement, Recurrent Energy will continue to oversee the remaining development phases. Once these milestones are met, BW ESS will assume control for the construction and long-term operation of the facilities.
Enhancing Grid Reliability
The inclusion of these battery assets is intended to address the growing demand for grid stability within France. By providing rapid-response flexibility, the units will assist in balancing supply and demand, particularly as the generation mix evolves. BW ESS aims to utilize these installations to absorb surplus power, ensuring that low-carbon generation is available when needed most.
This sale highlights the ongoing expansion of the energy storage sector. Both companies noted that this transaction confirms the value of high-quality storage platforms in supporting the integration of renewable energy into the national grid. Recurrent Energy and BW ESS will continue their partnership through the construction phase to ensure the successful delivery of these assets.
Dylan Marx, CEO of Recurrent Energy, said, “This transaction with BW ESS showcases our ability to create value through the delivery of high-quality BESS projects, while remaining closely involved in their development through to commercial operation. It is a strong testament to the BESS platform we have built in France and our ability to continue scaling it. Once operational, the projects will provide flexible storage capacity to support grid stability, balance supply and demand, and facilitate the further integration of renewable energy into the French electricity system.”
