Westinghouse dispatches first fuel assemblies consignment for EDF in France

US-based nuclear energy company Westinghouse announced that the first consignment of Light Water Reactor (LWR) fuel assemblies has been dispatched for Electricité de France’s (EDF) Gravelines 5 power station in Northern France.

The LWR fuel assemblies were manufactured at Westinghouse’s manufacturing unit located at Springfields.

Westinghouse Springfields site operations director Mick Gornall said the company has delivered its first LWR fuel to EDF.

“This is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work and support by many people at Springfields to ensure that the product qualification was approved by EDF,” Gornall added.

Westinghouse has invested in refurbishing the LWR production facilities at Springfields to help the plant achieve safety and operational standards to produce fuel assemblies.

The plant has a capacity to produce 200 ton of fuel per annum with the capability to further increase the production capacity.
