Berkshire Hathway subsidiary MidAmerican Solar will acquire and develop two Antelope Valley Solar Projects (AVSP) in California from solar panel manufacturer SunPower with a cummulative installed capacity of 579MW.

The AVSP projects are co-located in Kern and Los Angeles Counties and together represent the largest permitted solar photovoltaic power development worldwide.

Southern California Edison (SCE) has agreed to purchase the power produced from the projects under two long-term contracts and has also secured an approval by the California Public Utilities Commission.

The projects are spread across a 3,230 acre site and employ SunPower’s proprietary Oasis Power Plant product designed for utility-scale solar projects.

SunPower is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the projects and will also undertake their operation and maintenance.

Construction of the projects is expected to begin by March 2013 and conclude by December 2015.

MidAmerican Renewables president Bill Fehrman stated that these projects support the company’s core business principle of environmental respect.
