Philippines-based geothermal energy company Energy Development (EDC) is set to mark its foray into wind energy sector with the launch of 87MW Burgos wind project.

The company will invest $300m for its development that includes costs of the wind farm, substation and transmission line. It is reportedly the largest investment made in the province of Ilocos Norte.

EDC president and chief operating officer Richard Tantoco noted that the project would step up further investments, thereby creating more jobs for the locals.

“In all the areas where EDC operates, we take pride in being able to help improve the living conditions of our host communities in parallel with the progress of their barangay, municipality, city, and province,” added Tantoco.

Following the commencement of operations in 2014, Burgos project is expected to generate 233GWh per annum, powering over a million households.

Meanwhile, the company has also inked a supply and maintenance contract with turbines manufacturer Vestas mandating it to provide the project with V90-3.0 MW wind turbines.

Currently, EDC’s portfolio comprises 1,130MW of geothermal and 132MW of hydroelectric plants.
