The new Perkins 5016 engine has entered production, completing the manufacturerโs 5000 Series range of full-authority electronic engines for power generation. Manufactured in Stafford, UK and Aurangabad, India, the range includes 6-, 8-, 12-and 16-cylinder configurations, providing up to 2500 kVA of standby power and up to 2250 kVA of prime power for customers worldwide.
The 61-litre V16 model delivers 1400-2500 kVA at 50 Hz and is designed for base load, prime and standby applications. Its intended uses include critical power installations at data centres, hospitals, airports and remote worksites, where dependable electricity supply and uptime are essential. Designed specifically for power generation, the Perkins 5016 engine is intended to address the requirements of applications with demanding electrical loads.
The engine incorporates technologies designed to improve load acceptance, fuel efficiency and operational reliability. It is engineered to meet ISO G3 and NFPA110 standards, with two smaller turbochargers on each bank to reduce transient response time compared with a single large unit. Its exhaust manifolds are designed to optimise gas flow to the turbochargers, helping reduce ramp-up time.
The 60 Hz configuration meets the U.S. EPA Tier 2 Emergency Stationary emission standard, while the 50 Hz version is available in fuel-optimised configurations designed to emit at levels equivalent to Tier 2. An electronically controlled fuel injection system manages fuel delivery to improve combustion and engine efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and support lower emissions. A low-pressure fuel system developed for the 5000 Series also enables operation with varying fuel quality and supports biodiesel blends up to B20 or 100% HVO1, subject to Perkinsโ fuel specifications.
Renewable HVO can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, while low oil consumption and 750-hour service intervals are intended to limit waste and maintenance requirements. Compact packaging supports installation where space is limited, and electronically controlled injectors adjust timing and pressure to accommodate different ambient temperatures and altitudes without sacrificing performance.
Commenting on the expanded range, Dan Bentley, EAME sales director at Perkins, said: โWith the 5016 in production, we have a comprehensive range of 6-, 8-, 12-and 16-cylinder full-authority electronic engines, delivering up to 2500 kVA, available to power our customersโ prime and critical standby applications,โ He added: โThe 5006, 5008 and 5012 models are already delivering dependable power in a wide variety of electric power generation installations around the world. The extensive endurance testing work across the range, including the 5016, means I have every confidence that the 16-cylinder will also meet our customersโ expectations for uptime.โ
The 5016 is positioned for data centres and critical power installations, as well as other high-power applications in markets where demand for dependable large-engine solutions continues to increase. Its development and testing form part of the wider 5000 Series offering, which is intended to serve a range of power generation requirements.
The Perkins 5016 engine is supported by the companyโs global service and support network, which includes authorised distributors providing connectivity and condition monitoring solutions, along with ongoing engine maintenance and repair. Support programmes include Perkinsยฎ Hypercare and Perkinsยฎ Platinum Protection. Perkins states that these services are intended to provide customers with greater peace of mind throughout engine operation.
