GE Vernova Inc. has agreed to acquire Trench Group from investment firm Triton Partners in a transaction valued at approximately USD 9 billion. The acquisition is intended to expand GE Vernovaโs high-voltage grid equipment portfolio, strengthen its electrification business and increase its manufacturing capabilities to address growing demand for electricity transmission infrastructure.
Under the agreement, GE Vernova expects to fund the acquisition equally through cash and debt. The transaction is currently expected to close in late 2027, subject to customary regulatory approvals and consultations with employee representatives where legally required.
The acquisition will expand GE Vernovaโs Grid Systems Integration and Power Transmission businesses by integrating Trench Groupโs product portfolio, engineering expertise and manufacturing operations. The combined capabilities are expected to support grid modernisation, energy security and the expansion of electricity networks.
Trench Group Adds High-Voltage Equipment Capabilities
Trench Group has more than 130 years of engineering experience and supplies equipment to over 800 utilities and hyperscalers worldwide. Its portfolio includes high- and medium-voltage bushings, instrument transformers and coils used in electricity transmission and distribution networks.
The company employs more than 3,000 people and operates 11 manufacturing sites across Europe, North America and Asia. Its products are used in a majority of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines built globally, supporting the transfer of electricity over long distances.
GE Vernova expects the acquisition to generate potential synergies through complementary products, broader geographical coverage, established customer relationships and manufacturing capabilities. Trenchโs operations also use automation, robotics and artificial intelligence-supported processes, which could improve production efficiency as demand for grid equipment increases.
Acquisition Supports Growing Grid Infrastructure Demand
The transaction comes as electricity networks face increasing requirements from ageing infrastructure, data centre expansion, renewable energy integration and industrial electrification. Higher-voltage transmission lines are becoming increasingly important for moving larger volumes of electricity efficiently.
According to GE Vernova Chief Executive Officer Scott Strazik, Trenchโs technology, execution capabilities and customer relationships will support the development of modern and resilient electricity grids.
Strazik highlighted Trenchโs approximately USD 5 billion in backlog and framework agreements, with some commitments extending into the next decade. This provides visibility into future business activity and is expected to contribute to the strategic and financial value of the acquisition.
Trench Group President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Bahadir Basdere said joining GE Vernova would provide the company with greater scale, access to additional markets and opportunities to expand its technological capabilities. The combination could help make Trenchโs high-voltage grid equipment components available to more customers while maintaining its focus on product quality, reliability and customer service.
Trench Expands North American Manufacturing Capacity
The acquisition will also strengthen GE Vernovaโs manufacturing presence in North America. Trenchโs newly opened facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, is expected to begin producing 765-kilovolt equipment in late 2027. The facility could support utilities seeking to expand transmission capacity and deploy advanced grid infrastructure.
Trench also offers technologies designed to address increasingly stringent environmental requirements. Its portfolio includes SF6-free and mineral oil-free solutions intended to reduce the use of certain hazardous materials and limit lifecycle emissions.
According to GE Vernova, higher-voltage transmission lines can carry up to six times more power per corridor than conventional lines, highlighting their potential role in expanding electricity transmission capacity.
Through the acquisition, GE Vernova aims to strengthen its position in the global electrification market and expand its ability to supply critical components for high-voltage electricity networks. The planned integration of Trench Groupโs engineering, manufacturing and product capabilities is expected to support the companyโs growth in grid infrastructure as electricity demand continues to increase.
