03-02-2014 London – UK The world’s largest concentrated solar power development – the 392MW Ivanpah Solar Thermal Project is now online. There has been little fuss but one of the most iconic solar developments in the world has connected to the gird and is now producing clean power.

The project spans over a vast 3500 acres with 170’000 heliostats and dominates the visual landscape of northeast San Bernardino County.
The Brightsource project features three towers, 459ft high and provides enough energy to power about 144’000 homes.

The towers have been quietly providing power since the turn of the year and the project is amongst the most well-known recipients of the Loan Guarantee program. The project received $1.6 billion in federal loan guarantees and has been selected for individual praise by Barack Obama.
The project was subject to planning controversy and was permitted amid protests from environmentalists who claimed it damaged the habitat of the rare desert tortoise. Brightsource spent over $80 million to rehouse desert tortoises in a nearby sanctuary.

At CSP Today USA 2014 (5-6, June Las Vegas) there will be a site visit opportunity of the Ivanpah plant for delegates and you will also have the chance to hear from the developers Brightsource and the operators NRG Energy.
