Angola awards consultancy contract to COBA for 2,070MW hydro project

Angola government has awarded a consultant contract to COBA, a Portuguese environmental and engineering consultancy, for 2,070MW Lauca hydropower plant on the Kwanza River.

As per the contract, the consultants will provide design, technical assistance for the project in association with consortium partner Lahmeyer during the contract time period of 66 months.

COBA will also extend support during contract negotiations, equipment design approval, inspections, shop assembly and final acceptance, besides overlooking civil construction works and deployment of electromechanical equipment.

The Lauca hydropower project comprises a roller-compacted concrete dam 132-meters-tall and a crest length of 1,075 meters, reported HydroWorld.

In addition to six power generating units in the plant’s primary powerhouse, the developers are keen to add a second powerhouse with a single 65.5MW unit at the bottom of the facility.
