The Viking Link project, a significant initiative in the world of interconnectors, has reached a noteworthy achievement by successfully concluding the final cable test for its ambitious 1.4GW energy link connecting the UK and Denmark. Stretching across an impressive 761 kilometers, the Viking Link cable will establish a connection between Lincolnshire in the UK and Jutland in Denmark, enabling the seamless exchange of clean electricity between the two countries.

The recent cable test, carried out from August 24th to 25th, aimed to verify the cables’ integrity by subjecting them to a testing voltage of 735,000 volts, which is 1.4 times their operational voltage. This assessment was conducted between the UK Converter site at Bicker Fen and the Danish Converter site at Revsing. The successful outcome of the test confirmed the reliability of cable terminations, both on land and under the sea.

A collaboration worth ยฃ1.7 billion between the National Grid and the Danish system operator Energinet, the Viking Link project’s completion will augment the National Grid’s interconnector capacity to 7.8GW, a capability that can provide electricity to approximately eight million households.
