Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company Masdar has launched an 8MW wind farm in the Republic of Seychelles in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Fund.

The eight-turbine Port Victoria Wind Farm is estimated to contribute 8% of Mahé Island’s energy capacity, powering more than 2,100 homes, and it will reduce emission of 5,500 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Masdar CEO and UAE minister of state H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said the Port Victoria Wind Farm represents economic development and social opportunity from renewable energy sources.

“With prices falling and new advancements in technology, renewable energy is reaching grid parity in many parts of the world,” added Al Jaber.

“With energy demand expected to double by 2030 – putting a further strain on our natural resources – renewable energy is a viable solution to power future growth.”

The project comprised installation of eight wind turbines on two separate islands alongside connection of the wind farm with 3km of subsea cables.

Masdar, meanwhile, is working on additional renewable sources including 15MW solar photovoltaic power plant in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
