UK-based engineering and construction company Petrofac has been awarded a €40m contract by Siemens Energy to facilitate support during the commissioning phase of two offshore wind projects in the German North Sea.

The contract includes provisions to provide logistics management, platform support services and maintenance services during the commissioning and testing phase of the two High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) offshore platforms.

In addition, the company will supply and manage jack-up accommodation barges, deliver ships, standby vessels and helicopter transfers alongside offshore crews to maintain platforms during the commissioning period.

Petrofac Europe offshore projects and operations senior vice president Walter Thain said that Germany is a potential target market for the company as it houses nearly 45% of the global offshore wind projects.

“This contract demonstrates our ability to export our expertise in offshore oil and gas into new markets and new geographies. We believe we have much to offer the growing offshore wind market, and look forward to working with key players such as Siemens to support Germany’s ambitions for renewable energy,” Thain added.

The 576MW HelWin1 and 800MW BorWin2 platforms, which are located near the islands of Helgoland and Borkum, respectively, are currently under construction.
