Centrica Energy has begun producing gas from its wholly-owned and operated Rhyl gas field located in the Morecambe Bay.

The gas field situated 39km off the coast of Barrow, UK, was first discovered in 2009.

Centrica will produce gas from the field using the existing North Morecambe platform and transport the gas through pipeline to onshore to its Barrow terminal complex for processing.

Centrica Energy East Irish Sea regional director Mike Astell said, “This is incredibly exciting news for everyone involved because it marks another lease of life for the Morecambe Bay area, securing energy for the UK and jobs for the local area.”

The company carried out appraisal drilling at the Rhyl North by the end of 2012 and found that 2P reserves being revised upwards from around 40 billion cubic feet to around 80 billion cubic feet.

In early 2013, additional appraisal drilling at the Rhyl confirmed that the reservoir reserves extended further than originally anticipated.
