European construction company STRABAG, through its Chilean tunnelling division, will design and construct the majority of the tunneling and carry out civil works for the Alto Maipo Hydroelectrical Power Plant in South America.

The company signed the contract, valued at $490m, with Alto Maipo, which is a subsidiary of the Chilean AES Gener and the American AES Corporation.

The scope of the contract includes a host of services such as detailed design engineering; construction of underground; civil works of the two Alfalfal II and Las Lajas hydroelectric plants across a length of 46.5km.

Design and construction at the 531MW hydroelectric complex is expected to begin this month and complete after four and a half years.

Alto Maipo Hydropower Plant is situated in the high Maipo River basin near the city of Santiago.
