Trinasolar and Smart Commercial Energy have delivered a 4.5 MWp rooftop solar installation at Western Sydney International Airport in Australia, scheduled to open in late 2026. The project uses 8,824 Trinasolar Vertex S+ 510W (NEG18R.28) modules and forms part of the airportโs clean energy infrastructure.
The system covers the main terminal roof, both terminal piers and covered car park walkways. Around 1.3 MW is installed on covered walkway canopies. The partners expect the rooftop solar installation to generate more than 5,800 MWh of renewable electricity annually and avoid an estimated 3,712 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
Smart Commercial Energy, Australiaโs leading independent solar and battery storage provider for businesses, served as engineeg, procurement and construction (EPC) provider, working with electrical contractor Heyday 5 and construction company Multiplex. The airport setting required specialized engineering assessments for aviation safety. Solar glare studies aimed to reduce reflections that could affect pilots.
Edison Zhou, Trinasolarโs Head of Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands, highlighted the companiesโ longstanding relationship and support for renewable energy projects in Australia. He emphasized technology reliability, financial bankability and local after-sales support.
Ben Adamson, Head of Projects and Performance at Smart Commercial Energy, who led delivery, described it as one of Australiaโs largest airport solar installations. He acknowledged the complexity and teamwork involved in completing it on schedule and within budget.
Huon Hoogesteger, Managing Director of Smart Commercial Energy, said the project shows renewable energy infrastructure can be integrated into major developments without compromising operational requirements or construction objectives.
The installation builds on more than a decade of collaboration between Trinasolar and Smart Commercial Energy with their previous projects including Goulburn Community Solar Farm, recipient of the 2026 Clean Energy Council Community Value and Impact Award. The airport project demonstrates solar powerโs role at commercial facilities with substantial electricity needs and extensive roof areas.
