French engineering group Alstom has secured a contract worth about EUR50m from Canadian utility Hydro-Quebec to modernise a hydroelectric generating facility in Canada.

Located on the La Grande River in northern Quebec, the Robert-Bourassa hydroelectric station consists of 16 units with a total generating capacity of 5,616MW. Alstom will design, manufacture and deliver four new 333MW Francis turbine runners for units 1-4 of the facility.

The company said it will also carry out the complete refurbishment and modernisation of two turbine-generator groups. Alstom will deliver new components, including ring gate, distributor, servomotors and turbine shaft, for unit 1 of the plant, while refurbishing some of the existing components for units 2 and 3, and replacing 16 electronic governor systems. Under the contract, the company has also an option to deliver four more runners for units 4-8 and the refurbishment and modernization of six more turbine-generator units.
